Following In Love is a research project that delves into the remarkable phenomenon of married couples, siblings, best friends, and even animals, who pass away within a short time of each other. Our mission is to uncover the deeply intertwined bonds that transcend mortality, and to share these inspiring stories of eternal love and devotion.
In 2009, I was the CEO of an advertising and marketing firm in Dallas, Texas. It was before the days of computers, so I’d have to jump in the car to deliver artwork to our clients. I’d always dial in a radio station that fit my mood. That day I felt like some country western. When I hit the station, the host was sharing a news story about an elderly couple who had died on the same day. The husband had had a heart attack and was raced to the hospital. Less than an hour later, the ambulance returned to pick up the wife. He was on the third floor. She was in the emergency room. He died. When they went down to let her know he had passed, she was already gone. Incredibly, they had died at the same time. I was hooked. How is that possible?
It was that story that awakened my interest in couples dying close together. I began researching the phenomenon of simultaneous departures through the eyes of such industry experts as the:
• Medical Community (Research & Conditions)
• Religious & Faith-Based Beliefs
• New, Spiritualistic Philosophy
• Caregivers
Broken-Heart Syndrome (BHS) is a condition most people have never heard of. BHS, where one intense event can cause your heart to fail even if you have no heart disease or risk factors. Medical Explanation: Intense anxiety or one emotional event will cause a surge of adrenaline in the heart, stun it and cause heart fa
The ideal outcome for this section are multiple interviews with religious leaders from varied Christian denominations, e.g., Baptist, Catholic, Protestant, Lutheran, etc.
In an interview with the Deacon of the Catholic Church here in Dallas, his take for “Why” couples pass at the same time was because “God gave them
Again, the ideal input for this section are multiple interviews with Spiritual Leaders across the spectrum of “New Age Beliefs”.
In an interview with a practicing spiritualist, I posed the question of why do they think couples pass together. Not all couples do this, so why these particular people?
Her answer was somet
The people that care for the elderly have a real advantage in seeing and understanding the Following In Love® phenomenon. They get to know them as a couple and understand better than most the spiritual bond that love can create.
In visiting with just a few, the feedback they provide is that the connection of the hearts
Although not the only such story, one of the most touching is when a couple die in each other’s arms. And so it was for a San Diego couple after 75 years of marriage. Both were madly in love, and died within 24 hours of each other.

One of the funniest stories of all time is when the husband dies on the way to his wife’s wake. Apparently he had a great sense of humor and the kids got the funeral home to do two visitations. The sign when guests arrived said, “Surprise – It’s a doubleheader.”
After years of studying this subject, the impact of stories like this still pull at people’s hearts. Be it romantic musings or wishful thinking, many people want for the grounding of a love so strong.

The Gerbers had been married 62- years and had known each other since the second grade. The couple were critically injured in a car accident in 2009 on their way home from Wichita, Kansas. A few days later, the family made the decision to take them off life support.
“The Gerbers were taken off life support at the same
One of the most famous FIL stories was that of Johnny Cash and June Carter. June left on May 15, 2003, and four months later, on September 12th, Johnny joined her.
From one of their hit songs, CauseI Love You, written by Johnny,
a line that foreshadowed his unbreakable link.
Surprisingly, signature departures are found beyond just married couples. They can be found amongst:
• Brothers - Monks
• Sisters – Three Sisters
• Friends – War Friends
• Pet Owners/Pets – Bette’s Grandad
And, where I never thought I’d find it, in the Animal Kingdom.
One of the first that comes to mind is John Adams and Thomas Jefferson dying on the SAME day, 50 YEARS after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Like a perfect slot machine line-up: All 7’s.
Bingo and Rosie, Rosie died first. Bingo was crush and weeks later past away.
Surprisingly, I’ve had some pretty strong“pushback” from some people about the concept of “Following In Love”. They attribute their passing close together as:
1.) Old School Thinking: In cases where women die right after their husbands they’d say, “The reason why is because women were subservient to their husbands. They died because they’re too insecure to live on.
-- Counter: Successful men follow close behind too!
2.) The remaining partner just “gave up on life” and died.
-- Counter: How do you explain them not knowing the other had died?
